The art and science of ordering for the table
How to please your party when you're the designated menu curator
There are two kinds of people at dinner: those who want to order, and those who want to be ordered for.
As a Capricorn control freak with a natural inclination to take charge, I’ll admit I fall into the first camp. The second menus hit the table, all eyes shift toward me.
I came into this role as the resident pescatarian of my friend group. We’d order for the table when we’d go out to eat, and I had to make sure I didn’t get sidelined by a meat-forward lineup.
Now, after years of practice, I can confidently say I’ve perfected the art (and science) of ordering for the table. Lucky for you, I’m sharing my secrets. Please note, this mostly applies to parties who are down to share, and if that’s not you…
My infallible 6-step formula for pleasing your dinner party
Scan the menu for standouts. Meanwhile, prompt your tablemates to do the same. Some people are happy to take a back seat here (literally could not be me), but the perk of being in charge is knowing your top picks will make it on the table.
Survey the table for selects. The ultimate goal when ordering for the table is making sure everyone gets to eat what they want while maximizing what the group gets to taste. Once you get a pulse check on your party’s interest, you can start shaping the overall order. But before that, be sure to…
Get your waiter’s inside scoop. A good server can be your secret weapon. When they swing by for drink orders, ask for their personal recommendations and any can’t-miss dishes. Their tips can help settle debates or point you toward the sleeper hits.
Turn inputs into output. Take what you’ve learned and do what you’re there to do: curate the menu! At this point you should be fully equipped to draft the very best, from apps to mains to sauces and sides.
Secure buy-in from the group. Once you have your plan, propose it to the table. You want to ensure everyone’s onboard with the order, so be open to making additions or swaps.
Pulse check the quantities when you place your order. When you convey your final selection to your server, don’t forget to ask whether they think it’s an appropriate amount of food for your party. You don’t want anyone to go hungry, and portion sizes are simply unpredictable these days.
Finally!! Sit back, relax, and enjoy your meal. Know that you and your crew have optimized your dining experience, all thanks to you taking charge. 👩🏻🍳💋
